BUSTED EARTH

A Strange New World Novel

“The best book I’ve read in years!”  My mate Dave, who hasn’t read any other books in years.

“What other book has intellectually-frustrated Zombies, mind-controlled skunks and the Prince of Monaco follow-through farting?!”  Me.

It’s Earth, but not as we know it…

…millions have perished, countless more are refugees on American soil and somebody broke Facebook.

Derek, the Alien who accidentally unleashed this chaos on Earth, has orders: salvage the crashed spaceship and leave this rubbish planet once and for all.

Ten thousand terrifying miles sit between the Antarctic alien colony and the ship in Scarborough high street. The survival of all of the colonists, and the rest of the world, depends on Derek’s success.

Around the globe, weird armies are massing, inexplicable forces are flowing through the undead and nature itself has been hacked. Derek is about to discover that a lot can go wrong in 10,000 miles…

Three simple steps to chaos...

1. Crash Alien spaceship

First, take one 90m wide purple ball containing a crew of pacifist aliens, carriers of an unfortunate virus, and accidentally crash it into Scarborough high street.

2. Release Zombie virus

Next, get one human to make physical contact with aforementioned aliens and transform into a ravenous zombie. Allow to bite another human and repeat 1-2 billion times.

3. Dispatch War Robots

Lastly, take one army of half-tested, highly-intelligent war robots, program to fight zombies and release. Run away to a golf course in Florida when all goes wrong.

The Cast

Aliens

The Aliens were on a mission to disprove the existence of extraterrestrial life. They failed. They crashed into Scarborough due to a silly calculation error and, after releasing total chaos on Earth, they managed to flee to Antarctica where they built a new home in the ice.

They are two foot wide, featureless grey balls which manipulate objects by contorting the forces of nature around them. They interconnect into various formations to move and communicate telepathically. They breed by... to be honest, no-one really knows how they breed, but they do and with numbers swelling, pressure is on to get back to the ship and get home.

Zombies

The unfortunate fusion of Human flesh and Alien physiology, the Zombies are technically dead but still find the means to complain about being perpetually hungry. They have not helped themselves much, choosing an extremely limited diet consisting of leather, feathers and breakfast cereals and putting in very little effort to avoid the inconvenience of ‘innard-freeze’ in the European winter.

By some fluke, however, they happen to be partially telepathic and one, who is less intellectually-limited than the rest of his kind, is determined to find betterment. He leads them into the North York Moors on a quest for enlightenment.

Bots

Initially released as human-controlled war machines, the highly-intelligent Bots soon learned that eliminating the Zombies they were programmed to destroy was tedious work. After detaching themselves from human control, they turned instead on their former masters for more of a blast.

Now, they are led by a little computer with big ideas. After destroying the human's entire digital system, and with it the fabric of society, it is intent on taking control of the entire global system... including nature itself. It doesn’t love others describing its grand plans as 'evil', but then given how superior it is to everything else, it doesn’t really care.

Humans

In the chaos that followed the Alien spaceship crash and the Zombie virus which followed, the humans fled Europe and Africa in droves across the Atlantic. Now tens of millions of refugees are camped on American shores stuck between the hostility of unwelcoming American hosts and a homeland overrun with Zombies.

Two British teenagers are the unlikely catalyst for action as the European Royals try to advance their efforts to build a force to sail back across the Atlantic and reclaim their lands from the Zombies. Being bereft of technology makes things all the more complicated, however, and it’s fair to say their hopes for a quick and easy answer are optimistic to say the least.

Other Stories and Thoughts

The Author

Ross Duggleby is a writer of novels, short stories and animations, an illustrator and dabbles in architecture.

Ross is plagued by an over-active imagination which makes normal life quite the challenge.

After devoting most of his life to buildings, he finally gave in to his creative urges and poured his mind into a concept for a new series of stories. These became A Strange New World, with Busted Earth the first mad story to be released. His self-established brief was to reinvent the standard tropes of normal sci-fi and hash them in a comic mashup which is designed to entertain, excite and get a laugh or two.

This first novel is now available on Amazon Kindle and will be accompanied soon by a series of surreal short stories, weird thoughts and whacky animation scripts. The second part of A Strange New World series, Chaos Rising, is where things get really crazy. This is written and awaiting the slog of a full edit to get it ready for reader eyes.
